Each individual government agency has the authority to conduct its own hiring and to determine the method to be used in the acceptance of the job application. The Vacancy Announcement issued by the Agency will announce the method to be followed in submitting job applications.

The following methods are currently the most prominent.

  1. A formal written Test or Examination.
  2. Completion of the OF-612 “short form” application.
  3. The Federal-style Resume typed and mailed or transmitted to the Agency by fax or the internet.
  4. Providing answers to various questions directly on-line.

All of these methods are rated and scored by Agency resource specialists or by automated rating systems to determine job eligibility. Formal written tests and exams are called “assembled exams” because people assemble in a large room. Application forms and on-line applications are called “unassembled tests” because people do not assemble in a room to take the test or exam.

Very often in addition to following directions as to the method to be used, the candidate will be asked to complete one or more of the following forms: SF-50,
DD 214, KSA’s, and Performance Appraisals. You may also be instructed to write answers to essay-type questions.
